- Apple Annie -
She is that little lady in the neighborhood of New York City who sold apples for a penny while watching over the children. During hard times their parents were either in food lines, looking for work or if they were lucky working. These children grew up never forgetting their Apple Annie and how she watched over and took care of them. Nor could they forget the wonderful pies she would occasionally bake for them. If you look through our restaurant you will find an orginial print copy dating to 1881 of Apple Annie and some of her children.
In the early 1900s Damon Runyon wrote her orginial story "Madame LaGimp." Later it was made into the orginial movie "Lady for a Day" (1933) starring May Robson and Warren William. It was then followed by the sequel "Lady by Choice" (1934) starring May Robson and Carole Lombard. In the film, a dancer hires an old bag lady to pose as her mother.
The most famous remake was produced in 1961 "Pocket Full of Miracles" starring Betty Davis as Apple Annie with Glen Ford and Peter Falk. This was also the debut of Ann Margaret as Apple Annie's daughter who had been raised in Spain and returns to New York to wed the Duke of Spain.
This is the movie that inspired Irwin Smith (Smitty) to create the restaurant's Apple Annie's theme. He opened the first Apple Annie's in Visalia, California in 1983.
